David R. McCarthy's Obituary
David Russell McCarthy, age 86, passed away August 7, 2018. David was born in the village of Birch Run Michigan, on February 15, 1932. He was the second of seven children, of Russell S. and Bernice L. (Wilson) McCarthy. After graduating from Muskegon Heights High School, David joined the United States Air Force, where he served with honor and pride in Libya during the Korean War. Upon returning stateside, he attended the University of Michigan and Ferris State University. David worked as a Certified Quality and Metallurgical Engineer, retiring in 1994 from Standard Automotive Parts Co. in Muskegon, MI. David was always eager to learn. Following retirement, he completed his Pharmacy Technician Certification at the age of 70. David, known by his friends as “Mac”, was admired and revered for his sharp wit and keen intellect, albeit he was also known for his brassy personality. He enjoyed taking the backroads on trips to Deer Camp or the Casino, giving him a chance to reminisce and bond with his son, Tim. He was a member of the Muskegon Elks Lodge #274. His lifelong passion of golf was more than just playing the game – it was about etiquette, honesty and integrity. In later years, David took pleasure in playing rounds of golf with his children and grandchildren, and he loved tinkering with his BMWs. His candor and sense of humor will surely be missed. He will be lovingly remembered by his five children: Ellen A. (David) Robinson, David R. McCarthy II, Neil M. McCarthy, Suzanne K. Jackson and Timothy J. (Lori) McCarthy; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; sister, Joline Jonaus; brother, Dr. Bruce (Margaret) McCarthy, M.D. and many nieces and nephews. David was preceded in death by Barbara, his devoted wife of 60 years, his brothers James, William and Bernard, and sister Alice Carole. A private family ceremony will be held with interment at Norton Cemetery.
