David Russell Pummel's Obituary
David Russell Pummel, age 74, passed away, with his family by his side, on Tuesday, December 12, 2023 in Muskegon – just one month after his loving wife, Shirley Pummel, who passed away on November 16, 2023. He was born September 14, 1949 in Muskegon to Harvey and Viola (Johnson) Pummel and lived his entire life in the area. David married Shirley Ann Mason on June 3, 1972 in Muskegon. He was a longtime member of First Christian Church of Muskegon where he served as an elder. He also volunteered his time for Sportsman for Youth, Muskegon Bowmen, Relay for Life as a 15-year prostate cancer survivor himself and participated with Soloman’s Karate for many years. Survivors include 2 daughters, Rhonda (Robert) Sternberg, Shannon (Rusty) Kolka; 7 grandchildren, Robert Sternberg, Damian Sternberg, Lawrence Berg II, Logan Berg, Kayla Jones, Kaylie (Pat) Kolka, Brenden Kolka; 7 great-grandchildren, Robert Sternberg Jr, Brody Miles, Alaina Sternberg, Marley Fles, Xaundra Rosales, Tammy Hills, Austin Kolka; many bonus grandchildren and bonus great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Jerome Pummel; 1 sister, Barb (Ralph) Nader; 1 brother-in-law, Bill Bowen; 1 sister-in-law, Sandra Pummel; his loving dog, Lilly; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley A. Pummel; his parents; 1 brother, Harvey Pummel; 1 sister, Geraldine Bowen; his father- and mother-in-law, Ernest and Mary Mason; and 2 sisters-in-law, Frances Pitre and Donna Mason. A Funeral Service will be held 11:00 AM Friday, December 15, 2023 at First Christian Church of Muskegon, 2755 Holton Road, Muskegon, MI 49445, with Pastor Robert Grams officiating. Visitation will be held 4-7PM Thursday at The Sytsema Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 737 Apple Ave, Muskegon, MI 49442. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to the service at church on Friday. Interment will take place at Mona View Cemetery.
