Dave, We haven't talked in many years but just a few weeks ago Pliskow showed me a new photo of you that he had taken at a gig. I was thrilled. So today when Gary Allen called to tell me you had passed, it was quite a shock. We have a lot of memories - lots of gigs together with Gary, the wonderful creative years in Ann Arbor, and yes, Muskegon High School where it all started. Dave was a joy, his talent was incomparable. Like so many under-appreciated and not fully recognized artists, he never let it get him down; rather, he found and spread happiness in where he was and what he was doing. Whether he had a single keyboard in front of him, or a dozen instruments ready on stands all around him, he amazed with his proficiency and versatility. If he had been born sooner, he would've given every Big Band leader a run for their money. His name belonged in lights with the likes of Tommy Dorsey, Glen Miller, and Louis Armstrong. For my money, if there's any true justice in Heaven, he is a headliner and I want him on the trombone for "When The Saints Go Marchin' In" when I pass through the gates! Rest in peace, Dave; we all know you deserve it, and we all know you need no rehearsal before Gabriel sounds that final trumpet! I had the privledge of working with Dave in the Dynamic Incredibles and various combo settings over the years and in my opinion he was a Musical Genius. He was a walking encyclopedia of jazz and music in general. May God Bless him as he did on earth!##imported-begin##Don Korth##imported-end##
Dave Kozal was the best and smartest player I have ever known. And people that good tend to be into themselves, not Dave. He had an infectious laugh and smile. I remember he was so upset, beside himself one night. He said he experienced a death in the family. He went on and on. I asked him who died, "my cat" he explained". He had great compassion for everything. A great friend to everyone whom has ever known him. I will miss him very very much. I"m sorry to hear about Dave. Far to young and a very painful loss for the family and friends. A great loss to the music world as we all know. I had the good fortune to play with Dave and Bob Stroup at the Empire Lounge about 1975 in Flint.He amazed me with his co-ordination between the keyboard and trombone. God Bless you Dave.
