I have so many good memories of Dave that it's hard to pick just one or two. We worked together at Griffin School for several years and Dave was a lot more than just a great custodian. He was an integral part of a lot of things way beyond his job description and was loved by all who got to know him. He was dedicated to his job and took pride in his work. One Sunday afternoon I went to school to get ready for the next week and I heard some noise in the back hallway. It was Dave buffing the floor. He had been in on Saturday to completely strip and wax the floor because he didn't like the way they looked and was back to finish the job. This was on his own time and he wasn't getting paid.
One Christmas vacation he and I built a loft for the kindergarten room. It was something the kindergarten teachers wanted and we got folks to donate the lumber and had it all carpeted and finished when school resumed. This took a fair amount of time and Dave had lots of work to accomplish during that time but very willingly helped out(actually he did a lot more than I did) The teachers and parents were so pleased that they had a nice ceremony with a nice engraved plaque with our names on it and the kids made us a nice thank you and sang some songs. It was in that room for many years and when Dave would deliver milk or go into the room for any other reason he was was warmly greeted to say the least.
Every St. Patrict's day we would arrive to find little green leprechaun
footprints on our desks leading to a little treat. No one was supposed to know who did it but we discovered that Dave would come in early and visit every room and office to surprise everyone.
Over the years we managed to stay connected by going out to breakfast every June and around Christmas. Dave was a good friend and I'll miss those breakfasts.
I only know Dave Jr. and Mike personally but I feel I know his other children as well because he liked to tell me about each of you and spoke with pride about what you were doing. To all of you I offer my sincere condolences. Losing a parent is very difficult but losing two so close together must be devastating. May the many good memories you have of them both help you through your loss. They will be missed!##imported-begin##Rog Smant##imported-end##
