Denis Van Potuznik's Obituary
Denis Van Potuznik, (81), of North Muskegon, Michigan, passed away February 5, 2024, unexpectedly of natural causes with his loving wife by his side.
Denis was born to James and Agnes “Buggy” Potuznik on July 24, 1942, in Muskegon, Michigan. He graduated from Muskegon Catholic Central High School in 1960, where he excelled in academics and basketball. As a sophomore, he met Barbara Petrak, who remained the love of his life for more than 65 years. After graduating, Denis joined his older brother James at Loyola University in Chicago on a basketball scholarship where he played and remained close friends with many members of the 1963 national championship team. Following his undergraduate studies, Denis and Barbara were married in the summer of 1964. June 27, 2024, would have marked their 60th wedding anniversary.
He continued at Loyola earning his Law degree in 1967. Denis and Barbara moved to Muskegon where he started his career in the prosecutor’s office and then moved on to private practice for over 40 years. He specialized in criminal and family law and established the Public Defender system in Muskegon County. He was renowned throughout West Michigan as a fierce advocate for his clients.
Denis and Barbara welcomed their daughters Denise (1965) and Lieschen (1967) into their lives completing their close-knit family. He loved nothing more than attending his girls’ sporting events and violin concerts and was actively involved in ALL aspects of their lives. Proudly walking Denise (Will) Meier and Lieschen (Bryan) Montgomery down the aisle for their weddings brought out Denis’ memorable grin and perhaps a tear in his eye.
Denis’ favorite role was that of proud Papa. Matthew and Hannah (Denise and Will) and Thomas and Lily (Lieschen and Bryan) forged a special relationship with their grandfather. Charles, married to Hannah, was a wonderful addition to his family. Denis had many passions in his life, but none approached his love for his family, especially his grandchildren.
Denis was an avid outdoorsman and looked forward to his hunting trips out west. He loved playing golf, enjoyed many family vacations that his daughters happily planned and played a mean game of bridge with his friends. The importance of FAMILY was the central theme that was present in every aspect of his life.
Denis will join his parents, brother, and beloved daughter, Denise, who preceded him in death. He was a long-standing member of Prince of Peace Catholic Parish and felt comfort and strength while attending Mass.
Our family would like to thank everyone for their support during this difficult time. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, February 24, 2024, at Prince of Peace Catholic Church, 1110 Dykstra Rd., North Muskegon, MI 49445 with a visitation one-hour prior at the church.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the North Muskegon Choir, Muskegon Rescue Mission or Muskegon Area Sports Hall of Fame. Denis loved listening to the beautiful singers, donated food and clothing continuously to the Rescue Mission and thoroughly enjoyed being on the board and participating in the Sports Hall of Fame.
