Denise Beatrice "Amma" Egan's Obituary
Denise Beatrice Egan, affectionately called “Amma”, went home to her Lord and Savior on Saturday, June 12, 2021. She was 81 years old. Denise was born August 27, 1939 in Dublin, Ireland to James Andrew and Ena Rose Beatrice (Reilly) Egan and came to the United States at the age of 15. Denise spent her first years in Port Huron, MI before relocating to Muskegon in 1963 where she has lived most of her life. Denise was a 61-year licensed cosmetologist and owned and operated The Master’s Touch Hair Salon in Muskegon with her daughter, Sheila Porter, until she retired in 2016. Denise was very devoted to her Catholic faith and was active in many of the Catholic parishes in Muskegon. Denise experienced her own conversion in the 1970’s when she became active in the “Covenant of Healing Love” Catholic Charismatic Prayer Community at Sacred Heart Parish in Muskegon Heights. That led to a lifelong vocation of service to the Church. In the 1990’s, Denise worked as the Director of Adult Formation and RCIA at Our Lady of Grace Parish. She has established numerous Catholic adult formation groups in the area – 5 of which are currently active – including “The Gathering” at her home parish, St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church of Norton Shores. Denise knew no strangers and welcomed anyone in need. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends. Survivors include her 5 children, Ron (Dawn) Johnson, Sheila Porter, David Johnson, Beau Hammond, Sean Hammond; 6 grandchildren, Egan (Chalee) Porter, Samantha Bluhm, Logan Veurink-Johnson, Meghan (Chris) Lehto, Sarah Johnson, Paij Johnson; 8 great-grandchildren, Logan, Roses, Ryan, Kylin, Eli, Blakely, Sloan, Harper; her sister, Clodagh Vani; 4 nephews, Jimmy Vani, Brendan (Terri) Vani, Kevin Vani, Ryan (Tracy) Vani; many great-nieces and great-nephews; close family members, Bruce Johnson and Shannon Aho; her longtime companions and friends, Connie Antekeier-Podulka and Nancy Gauthier; and the countless friends from her Prayer Communities. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11:00 AM Wednesday, June 16, 2021 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church (2929 McCracken St.) with her pastor, Father Charles D. Hall presiding. Visitation will take place one hour before Mass, 10-11 AM Wednesday in the Gathering Space at Church. Memorial Contributions may be directed to St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church.
