Dirk Rayborn Smalligan's Obituary
DIRK RAYBORN SMALLIGAN, age 72, passed away on March 24, 2011 in Lebanon, Tennessee. Born September 8, 1938 in Muskegon, Dirk was the son of Evert and Rachel Smalligan. He was a graduate of Muskegon High School and Muskegon Community College. Dirk lived and worked in the Muskegon/Spring Lake area most of his life. During his teenage years, he helped out his parents at their family bicycle shop. After an enlistment in the Marine Corps, Dirk began employment as a draftsman at Continental Motors in 1959 and worked his way to become Director of Vehicle Programs in the engineering department. His work took him to numerous countries, primarily in the Middle East and Asia and the relationships he developed with his foreign counterparts positively shaped his views of the world. After 45 years at Teledyne Continental Motors (later General Dynamics), he retired in 2005 and volunteered as a member of the Ferrysburg Planning Commission. Dirk enjoyed reading, especially American history. He devoted most of his free time to his family and traveling. Dirk is survived by his children: DeAnna Fry (Larry), Kip Smalligan, Daral Kim Smalligan (SooJin); step children, Klint McKay (Adrienne), Kelley McKay, Heather Constable (Michael); sister, Marilyn Walters (Bob); and several nieces, nephews, and grandchildren. VISITATION will take place on Sunday, April 17 (5:00 - 7:00 PM) at The Lee Chapel Sytsema Funeral Home, Inc. 6291 S.
