Donald W. Carson's Obituary
Mr. Donald W. Carson, age 74, died Saturday afternoon, April 6, 2013 at the Poppen Residence, following a 2 month illness. Don was born September 21, 1938 in Muskegon to Martin and Vivian (‘nee Rose) Carson; and had resided most of his life in the Muskegon area. He was a 20-year U.S. Navy veteran having served three tours of duty during the Vietnam War; and having taught at Great Lakes Training Center. Don then worked as a boiler technician and pipe fitter at Brunswick Corporation for 25 years, prior to retiring in 2001. He currently was serving on the Board of the Port City Federal Credit Union. Don was a member of American Legion Post #9, VFW Post #446, where he served as a Past Commander, the Muskegon County Council of VFW Honor Guard and of the New-Ocea Muzzle Loaders Club. Don was an avid golfer, enjoying both the Port City Golf League and the “Old-geezers” Golf League. He also enjoyed hunting, motorcycle riding and harassing his family and friends. On July 12, 1980 he married the former Jean Schmidt and she survives him along with 3 daughters, Sherri LaGood, Shirley (Tony) Watkins, both of WA and Shelly (Lloyd) Green of OR; 6 grandchildren; 6 great-grandchildren; brother, Jerry (Karen) Carson of FL; sister, Jean (Arland) Mitteer of AK; 2 sisters-in-law, Jeannette Molby of AZ and Joyce (Jim Smith) McDonald of Hesperia and by several loving nieces and nephews. SERVICES will be held 1:00 PM Wednesday at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 6291 S. Harvey Street, Norton Shores, MI 49444, 231-798-1100, with Chaplain Ginny McGowen officiating. Military honors will be under the auspices of VFW Post #446, American Legion Post #9 and the Muskegon County Council of VFW. VISITATION with Don’s family will be 6-8PM Tuesday and one-hour prior to the service on Wednesday. For a more lasting memorial you are asked to consider the Muskegon County Sheriff's Dept. Victim Services Unit or Harbor Hospice.
