Donald Jay Nelund's Obituary
Mr. Donald Jay Nelund, age 94, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2025 in Muskegon, Michigan. He was born in Muskegon on April 28, 1930 to Lester and Effie (Pothof) Nelund. On June 19, 1954, Don married the former Delyn F. Harmon, and they enjoyed nearly 71 years of marriage. Don's gentle nature and humble personality, combined with his deep love for his family, created a strong, nurturing home that served as a foundation not only for his three children, but also for his extended family. Don was a veteran of the United States Army and served in the Korean War. He dedicated 30 years to Muskegon Piston Ring before spending a decade driving a bus for Fruitport Community Schools after retirement. He enjoyed simple pleasures like golfing and following the Detroit Tigers and Michigan Wolverines. Don and his wife Delyn shared a love of travel, especially to the National Parks and wintering in Gulf Shores, Alabama. They cherished their many trips to Mackinac Island, including a recent visit to celebrate their 70th wedding anniversary. He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Delyn; three children, David Lee Nelund, Deanna Medendorp, and Darlene (James) Hershberger; 10 grandchildren, Jessica Crays, Virginia (Vin) Meloro, Troy (Katie Baker) Nelund, Katie (Ben) Raczka, Andrea (Josh) Schultz, Brandon (Courtney) Medendorp, Chad (Dawn) Medendorp, JJ (Katie) Hershberger, Timberly Hershberger, and Amanda Mears; 19 great-grandchildren (and two more on the way); brother, Marv (Viv) Nelund; and sister, Lois Reed. He was preceded in death by his parents; son-in-law, Bryan Medendorp; brother, Ray Nelund; sisters, Phyllis Tawney and Mary Lou Sowels; and siblings-in-law, Burt Reed, Thelma Nelund, Chuck Tawney, and Larry Sowels. A CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE will be held 11:00 AM Friday, April 25, 2025 at Lake Harbor United Methodist Church (4861 Henry St., Norton Shores, MI 49441) with Pastor Mary Ivanov officiating. Fellowship with Don’s family will be held immediately following his service. MEMORIALS in memory of Don may be directed to the Lake Harbor UMC Memorial Garden.
