Don was a kind, thoughtful and transparent leader, quick witted and positive. Interestingly, I met Don during my first days at Lilly as a post doc fellow and then our paths did not cross again until his last few years at Lilly. I immensely enjoyed both times and learning from him. As he retired he told me that he loved his work and the impact he had but was looking forward to time with family and friends and making an impact more close to home. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

To Pat and their children I send my deepest condolences at your loss. Working with you designing and building your house in zionsville was such a warm experience. Don’s commitment to you was heartwarming and exemplary. He wanted the best for each of you, and he readily did whatever was needed to accomplish that goal. Dear Pat,

My deepest condolences to you and your family. Don was a trusted colleague, a mentor and a friend. He truly put "ethics" at the center of both his personal and professional life, and I feel so fortunate to have benefited from that.

Don was brave way before his ultimate fight, a brave and generous man with a deep appreciation for friendship and family values. This is how I and I'm sure many more will continue to remember him.

I was fortunate to meet Don at Lilly when he was a high ranking executive and I was a new associate. I admired him from afar until I experienced writers block on a manuscript about severe sepsis. As my cubicle was near his, I got up the courage to pick his ID doctor brain. Don was the lovely person you all know well and he cheerfully deciphered complex concepts for me. After this, Dr. Don became my “ go to” ID expert regardless of his Lilly responsibilities. Despite all Don’s success he was grounded in his “roots”. Knowing Diane and Pat, the Therasse roots are evident across the family. I am fortunate to have been near their light.

I am so sorry that Don left the world too soon. He is a special being and his many acts of kindness will keep him with us. I only wish I could pick his brain one more time! Jane Bromund

Dear Pat,
My deepest sympathies to you and your family for your terrible loss.
Don was a wonderful colleague and boss. He was an asset to Lilly, to his colleagues and to patients around the world. He knew the secret to staying calm, wise, and strong in the most difficult situations. It was such a pleasure working with him, and I wish we had many more years of working together. He will be remembered by many.

My dearest Michelle and the whole Therasse family,

I am so sorry for your loss. Dr. T was a truly one of a kind person who made everyone around him feel seen and special. He created a beautiful family, enjoyed the simple + finer things (steak, wine, and Michigan football) and gave more during his time here than he took. His loss will be felt by so many and I wish I could be there to wrap you all in a hug and offer you some comfort, but you are with me in my thoughts and heart.

Shortly before he passed Dr. T and I exchanged emails, and he expressed his comfort in knowing that when he passed you all would be embraced by so many people and that his spirit would continue to live through each one of you. He lived a good life and leaves behind a wonderful legacy. He's also the only person I know who could seamlessly work the phrase "...the whole rabies post-exposure prophylaxis escapade!" into an email :).

I will miss your dad very much.

I love you all and hope you find comfort in the fact that he is now at peace and you will meet again.
