Donald J. Sliter's Obituary
Mr. Donald Jay Sliter, age 83, went to his eternal home, April 4, 2007. He was born in Fremont, MI to George and Harriet (Cook) Sliter. He was a hardworking man beginning his working career as a teenager, raising chickens and delivering milk. He became a self-taught carpenter and built several homes and installed many swimming pools. Mr. Sliter loved woodworking and made doll houses, cradles, trucks and other toys for his grandchildren. He owned Sliter’s Blueberry Farm which taught his children good work ethics. His last ten working years were spent in Detroit as a carpenter for the State of Michigan. After retirement, winters were spent in Mesa, Arizona where he made several dear friends. He was a past member of Dalton Baptist Church and a member of Fifth Reformed Church. On June 6, 1947 he married the former Mary Driscoll. Mary died April 16, 2002 after 55 years of marriage. They had five children, daughters, Sue (Ted) Berghuis, Nancy (Gary) Williamson; sons, Jim (Chris) Sliter, Bob (Rita) Sliter, Scott (Terry) Sliter; 17 grandchildren; 24 great grandchildren, plus ½ and ½. He leaves one sister, Mary Jane Sondregger; one sister-in-law, Jackie Drake; and very beloved friends, Betty Bjornstrom, and Tim & Sandy Stimers. He was also preceded in death by his parents, two sisters. SERVICES will be 11 AM Saturday at Fifth Reformed Church (2330 Holton Rd.) with the Rev. Norm Swier officiating. VISITATION with the family will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Friday at The Sytsema Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Ave. 231-726-5210 and one hour prior to the service at church. Burial will take place in E. Dalton Oakhill Cemetery. Memorial Contributions to Harbor Hospice would be appreciated.
