Donald L. Slocum's Obituary
Mr. Donald Loren Slocum, age 87, passed away Thursday, February 23, 2006 at a local hospital. He was born January 3, 1919 in Muskegon to George and Clara (Gregerson) Slocum and lived his entire life in the area. On September 25, 1946, he married the former Marcella G. Mierle in Muskegon. Don was very proud of his service to the country in the US Army Air Force. He served as a first lieutenant during WWII and was proud to be an Air Force pilot and flight instructor. He piloted many aircraft, among them the B-52 Bomber. Don worked 44 years at Teledyne Continental Motors and retired in 1984 as a technical inspector. He was an active member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church and volunteered as an usher and collections counter. Don also volunteered in the OLG Food Pantry, area soup kitchens and brought communion to people in nursing homes and hospitals. He was a proud member of the Catholic War Veterans. He enjoyed the outdoors, especially hunting, fishing and camping. Don is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marcella G. Slocum of Roosevelt Park; 2 children, Ann L. (Larry) Tilford and Donald G. Slocum both of Muskegon; son-in-law, David Soli of Detroit, MI; 5 grandchildren, Larry and Barry Tilford, David, Donald and Kristin Soli; 2 great grandchildren, Elizabeth Ann and Nolan Guy Tilford; 2 brothers, Lewis Slocum of Muskegon and Robert Slocum of Grand Haven; 1 sister, Virginia (Tom) Wall of Grand Haven. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Verna Mae Soli in 1996, his parents, and 1 brother, George Slocum. THE MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated 1:00 PM Tuesday, February 28, 2006 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Michael P. Olson, as priest celebrant. Military Honors will be presented at the church offered by the Muskegon County Council of Veterans. INTERMENT will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery. VISITATION with Don’s family will be 2-4 and 6-8 PM Monday at The Walburn Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 1547 W. Sherman Blvd., (231) 759-8565.
