I had Mr Hesling for chemistry in my junior or senior year and he was certainly an engaging teacher. He kept a steel rod on his desk and if he thought the attention of the class was lacking he would stop talking and give the rod a nudge and it would slowly roll until it went off the edge and hit the floor with a LOUD clanging sound.
After the first time you experienced that you would tense up if you noticed the class not paying attention, waiting for the sound of that rod rolling.
He also had a habit of putting a drop of Butyric acid on a student's paper if they were drifting off, which happened once to me! The smell was like baby barf!
I don't remember a lot of my teachers from almost 50 years ago, but he certainly made an impression! Rest in peace.
