Donald N. Smith's Obituary
Mr. Donald Smith, age 90, passed away August 20, 2010 at his home. He was born on May 16, 1920 to Nicholas and Bertha (DeRose) Smith in New Era. He was a past member of Westwood Reformed Church. Prior to his retirement in 1985, Mr. Smith had worked at Clarke Floor Machine for 39 years. He served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II and toured North Africa and parts of Italy. Mr. Smith had a passion for music, playing in many bands for the past 70 years, and currently played in the “Old Timers.” He also has been inducted into the State of Michigan Music Hall of Fame. Many years ago, Mr. Smith was a proud Harley Davidson enthusiast, which included motorcycle riding, tuning up and selling. On September 6, 1949 he married Barbara Macario in Muskegon and she survives him along with 2 children, Donna Grams of Grand Rapids and David Smith of Muskegon; 2 sisters, Elaine Lindback and Verna (Herman) Lederer; brother-in-law, Eugene (Libby) Macario, special friend, Gene Grams, and many nieces and nephews. Mr. Smith was preceded in death by his brother, Norman Smith. MILITARY FUNERAL SERVICE will take place 1:00 PM, Friday, August 27, 2010 at The Walburn Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 1547 W. Sherman Blvd. 231-759-8565 with Pastor John H. Brown officiating. VISITATION with the family will be 2-4 PM Thursday and one hour prior to the service on Friday. In lieu of flowers, please consider American Diabetes Association. Burial will take place at Lakeside Cemetery.
