Dorothy "Sandy" M. Sumners' Obituary
Mrs. Dorothy M. Sumners, age 94, passed away on Sunday, December 8, 2019 in Muskegon. She was born on May 19, 1925 in Manistee, MI to Charles and Helen (VanColen) Hansen. On July 29, 1950, she married Robert Sumners, and he preceded her in death on August 23, 1989. “Sandy” was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. She volunteered as nurses’ aide during WWII; loved instrumental and vocal music; sang in Big Bands during the 1940s. She and husband Bob would clear the dancefloor displaying their Jitterbug skills. Sandy also enjoyed china painting, and there was no project she wouldn't tackle or problem she couldn't creatively solve. Above all, she had a strong commitment to family and friends. She also volunteered at Mercy Hospital Guild and Gift Shop, Hackley Cancer Unit. Sandy worked at LeFleur Shoppe in Muskegon as office manager and floral designer, winning various floral design awards. SURVIVORS include four children, James (Patty) Sumners, Helen (Charlie) Rowe, Bob (Kaye) Sumners and John Sumners; six grandchildren; and seven great grandchildren. Dorothy was also preceded in death by her parents, and brother, Charlie Hansen. The MASS of CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be 11AM Thursday, December 12, 2019 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church Marian Chapel with Fr. Charles Hall officiating. VISITATION with the family will be one hour prior to the mass, from 10-11AM Thursday. A prayer vigil and time of sharing will take place in Marian Chapel on Wednesday from 4:00-5:30PM.
