I was very lucky Doug was my seatmate in the state legislature. He was like a big brother - always showing me the ropes, explaining things to me, and asking questions to make me think things though more carefully. . He was beloved and respected by everyone in the legislature because of his plain-spoken truth and quirky sense of humor. Doug always spoke the plain, unvarnished truth, no matter who was in the room. He was known for being a tireless supporter of working men and women. He complained about bosses who said they "gave" people their wages. No. They earn their wages. He listened patiently when we discussed issues in caucus. Then he summarized what was said and added his thoughts about it in a strong and memorable way. It was always fun to watch the Bennett family in parades - kids and grown ups of all ages, and they always looked so happy to be together. My sympathy goes out to his family. I know they will miss him, as we all will. I am sad I will be out of town and unable to attend his celebration of life. Godspeed, Doug. Rest in peace.
