I am Antonio father of
Alba of Spain, I convey to you my most sincere condolences. For my family he has been a great friend.

I cannot believe to be writing this, it is a very sad day after knowing that I will not be able to see Doug again. Him and Gay will always be my sister's American parents, and in this sense, they have always treat me as if I was family. Doug inspired me since the very first time I meet him, not only for his kindness, family spirit and works ethic, but also for his capability to listen to anyone with care. It has been more than 17 years of having you in my hearth, and I know that you had us also. You made always possible to see each other, Michigan, Madrid, Valencia, Ontinyent, Washington (attached there is a photo of our dinner at Jaleo), even Zaragoza. You even made the effort to come to our wedding, one of the best presents we receive that day (sorry but I had to share a photo of you having fun also). We cannot be more lucky to have had you in our lives. We will have you, Gay and all your family in our prayers. Rest in peace, Ismael Viejo and Rebeca Herrero.
This obituary is absolutely accurate. Yes, it is always nice to say nice things but, Doug positively lived every day in a manner that made us all proud to know him.
Doug and Gay exemplified practicing Christians. They look past what is expedient or popular and dive into what is necessary to aid their fellow humans serving with dignity, honesty and sincere compassion.
Our hearts are so broken by this loss that we cannot find the words to describe the feeling.
I first met Doug (and Gay) in
1973 when we both worked as volunteers helping victims of a tornado in Kentucky. I was immediately drawn to him and his warmth.
Doug was passionate about helping people in need as a beloved volunteer for Humane Borders in Tucson. He was instrumental in setting up one of our lifesaving water stations near the Arizona/Mexico border. He will be remembered for his compassion and selflessness in a world that needs more good deeds. My sincere sympathies to his loved ones. Laurie Cantillo, Board Chair, Humane Borders
