Mr. Douglas D. Smith's Obituary
Douglas Dale Smith, age 78, of Fruitport Township, MI., lost his courageous fight with complications from diabetes. He passed peacefully at home in the care of his loving wife, Ida. Doug was a 1957 graduate of Muskegon Heights High School. He had been employed by Muskegon Piston Ring for 35 years before retiring in 1994. Doug was President of UAW Local 480, Chairman of UAW Local 480 Retiree's Chapter, former Chairman of UAW Area 3 Retiree's Council, and former Chairman of the UAW CAP Council. Doug was also a proud, long time, active member of the Muskegon County Democratic Party, a Precinct Delegate, and until recently, a Democratic Party Representative to the Muskegon County Board of Canvassers. Doug was a Lifetime Member of the Independent Order of Vikings, Linne #57 and a Golden Eagle with the Muskegon Fraternal Order of Eagles 668. Doug is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ida and by his daughter Debra (Brian) Rich of Pennsylvania and their children, Zachary and Ali. He was predeceased by his son David, but is survived by his daughter-in-law Grace Smith and their children, Eva and Hayden of Rockford, MI. Doug is also survived by his sisters Carol (Joe) Millett and Susan Lathrop; brothers, Jack and Michael Smith; sister-in-law Sally Fohlbrook; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. A VISITATION with Doug’s family will take place on Friday, April 21, 2017 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St. (231-798-1100) from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm.
