Douglas E. Martyn's Obituary
Douglas E. Martyn, age 83, of Grand Haven passed away early Monday, May 11, 2009, at his home. He was born December 7, 1925, in Flint, MI, to Lloyd and Esther (Fischer) Martyn, and he married the former Joyce L. Bentley on August 18, 1951, in Fenton, MI.
Mr. Martyn moved to the Tri-Cities area from Flint in 1979. Doug had a 30 year career as a journeyman experimental sheet metal model maker for the Buick Motor Division of General Motors and was a proud member of the U.A.W. Local #599. He served his country in the U.S. Army as well as the Air Force during World War II, stationed in Alaska as a medical technician and achieved the rank of Sergeant. Doug was a member of the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28 in Grand Haven. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Dunes where he formerly served as a trustee. Doug loved to tinker and he especially enjoyed building wooden children’s toys and candy machines out of mahogany. He also enjoyed flowers and gardening. An avid sports fan, he especially enjoyed following Grand Haven and Michigan State sports.
Survivors include his loving wife, Joyce; two daughters, Ann Louise (Timothy) Antaya of Hampton Falls, New Hampshire, and Judy Alice (Tom) Hanson of Grand Haven; one son, Kim Edward (Debora Mott) Martyn of Burton, MI; eight grandchildren: Claire, Andrew Antaya, Kyle, Michele, Madalyn Hanson, Stephanie, Timothy, and Sara; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles.
The service for Doug will be held at 12:00 noon on Saturday, May 16, 2009, at the United Methodist Church of the Dunes with Rev. Daniel Duncan officiating. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28. A reception will follow the service at the church. Friends may meet the family 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 15, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Memorial contributions to Hospice of North Ottawa Community or the United Methodist Church of the Dunes Memorial Fund are appreciated.
