Dr. JW Hunt's Obituary
Dr. JW Hunt, age 92, passed away Monday morning, November 7, 2011 at Poppen Residence. Born in 1919 in Battle Creek to J. Mart and Gladys (Kellogg) Hunt, he graduated in 1942 from Western Michigan University. During World War II he was stationed at Camp Kilmer, New Jersey, where he worked in the Ears, Eyes, Nose, and Throat Clinic at the station hospital. In 1948 he graduated with an O.D. from Northern Illinois University School of Optometry. He married Lois Van Andel on May 16, 1953 in Fremont, Michigan. In 1956 he opened his practice in Vicksburg, Michigan, remaining there for 35 years while raising his family. From boyhood “Doc” was a familiar face at local golf courses and bowling alleys in Battle Creek, Vicksburg, Kalamazoo, and Muskegon. While working at Battle Creek Country Club in the 1930s, he once caddied for golfing legend Byron Nelson. Dr. Hunt leaves behind his wife, Lois; a son, Robert (Judy) Hunt of Norton Shores; daughter, Jean Hunt of Chelsea; two sisters, Dorothy Harrington of Janesville, Wisconsin, and Marjorie Fox of Parrish, Florida; many nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by infant brother, Robert, and sister, Mary Rogers. VISITATION will be from 4-7PM Thursday at The Sytsema Chapel 737 Apple Ave. 231-726-5210 A private graveside service will be held Friday at Maple Grove Cemetery, Fremont. MEMORIALS to the Salvation Army would be appreciated.
