Edmundo "Ed" Gutierrez's Obituary
Edmundo “Ed” Gutierrez of Grand Haven, Michigan, and Franklin, N.C., passed away Monday, March 18, 2019, at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center, Gainesville, Ga. He celebrated his 88th birthday on December 25, 2018.
Ed was born in Topeka, Kansas, as the youngest child, with five older brothers. He served in the United States Air Force and was stationed near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, England, where he met and married his love and wife of 65 years, Jean Lindley, on November 13, 1954. Ed and Jean subsequently moved to the United States, living in California, Chicago and Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, Grand Haven, Michigan, and Franklin, N.C. He was trained as an architect and worked at that profession his entire life; his not-guilty pleasures were sitting in the warm sun, a little sweet treat after lunch and dinner, golf and football with a smattering of basketball thrown in for good measure. He loved the University of Michigan and, instead of “hi” or “hello,” his initial greeting to most people was “Go Blue.” In fact, he enjoyed teaching his grandchildren to say the same thing, and he tried that with the dogs, too.
Ed spent many a Saturday on the golf course with his buddies who, along with their wives, became “the gang.” He loved each and every one of you! There was never a better time than to eat a meal out with his longtime friends. The Legion was one of his favorite spots to eat. He also loved seeing his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren whenever possible. Family was very important to him, including his many nieces and nephews from the Topeka, Kansas, area, where he was fondly called Uncle Moony, and beyond. His job led to many friends in the Muskegon and Baldwin areas of Michigan.
Ed is survived by his loving wife, Jean; their children: Ivy Madsen of Franklin, N.C., Shane (John) Gutierrez of Grand Haven, Donna Viveen of Franklin, N.C., Mark Gutierrez (Anivette) of Alamogordo, N.M., Denise Bussing (Randy) of Muskegon, and Michael Gutierrez (Teresa) of Allegan, Mich. His grandchildren include David (Stephanie) DeHaan, Evan (Orlando) Torres, Kellan (Forrest) Morton, Owen Viveen, Michelle (David) Kurz, Ryan Gutierrez, Eddie, Kyle and Anthony Bussing, CodiBrianne and Michael Gutierrez. Ed is also survived by 13 great-grandchildren, and many, many nieces and nephews.
Ed was preceded in death by his daughter, Andrea Gutierrez; grandson, Harry Bussing; his parents; and five brothers.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, July 20, 2019, at St. Patrick – St. Anthony Catholic Church in Grand Haven with Rev. Norm Droski as celebrant. Military honors will be provided by the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post # 28 Honor Guard. Interment will be in Lake Forest cemetery. Memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital are appreciated. Services are entrusted to The VanZantwick Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 620 Washington Ave, Grand Haven, MI 49417.
