Mr. Edward Eugene Sullivan's Obituary
On the evening of August 16, 2014, Edward Eugene Sullivan passed away peacefully of natural causes at Stoneleigh Hospice Residence in Lansing, Michigan. He was 76 years old. He was born in Ravenna, Michigan on July 18, 1938 and was the third child of Glenn and Dora Sullivan. Gene graduated from Ravenna High School, earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Western Michigan University, and a Doctorate from the University of Michigan Ann Arbor. He was a Professor of Education at the University of Michigan Flint for nearly thirty years. After he retired, he moved from Grand Blanc to Okemos, Michigan. Gene loved spending summers with his family and friends on his sailboat and at his cottage in Pentwater. In his spare time, Gene also enjoyed playing tennis, traveling, cheering on the Michigan Wolverines, working on home improvement projects, and volunteering at church and for Habitat for Humanity. His adventurous personality led him to learn how to fly a plane, to rebuild antique cars, and to even go hang gliding, but his favorite pastimes of all were helping others in need and just hanging out with his family. He had a kind, generous spirit and will be greatly missed by all. Gene is SURVIVED by his children, Joel Sullivan, Taylor Sullivan and Renee Herrington; grandchildren, Hannah and Matthew Sullivan, and Melissa, Connor and Cameron Herrington; brothers, William, Howard and Barry Sullivan; sisters, Gaylon Vanhouten, Nancy Warmolts and Mary Lou Huffman. Gene was preceded in death by his parents; and brother, Michael Sullivan. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held on Thursday, August 21, 2014 at 11:00AM at the Wolf Lake United Methodist Church, 370 Vista Terrace, Muskegon, with Rev. Susan Hagans officiating. After the ceremony there will be a gathering for friends and family in the church hall with the burial immediately following at Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Muskegon.
