Edwin Harold Nelson's Obituary
Edwin Harold Nelson, age 92, of Grand Haven passed away Friday, August 2, 2013, at Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born August 25, 1920, to Edwin Gottfreid and Myrtle Anna (Wangerin) Nelson. He married the former Loryce Elaine Krueger on February 2, 1946, in Marinette, WI.
Edwin served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He then attended Western Michigan University where he earned his Master’s Degree. Edwin was a teacher for Grand Haven Public Schools for 33 years before retiring. He loved woodcarving, fishing and traveling. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of the Dunes.
Edwin is lovingly remembered by his wife, Loryce; two daughters, Sandra (David) Vandervelde and Linda (Bill) Mlynarchek, both of Grand Haven; his son, Edwin (Laurie) Nelson; six grandchildren: Julie (Mike) Moll of Grand Haven, Mark Vandervelde of Grand Rapids, Tom (Audrey) Vandervelde of Boston, MA, Daniel (Hannah DeBerg) Vandervelde of Seattle, WA, Sara Mlynarchek of Denver, CO, Matt (Darcie) Mlynarchek of Brighton; and six great-grandchildren: Steven Moll, Emily Moll, Zoe Vandervelde, Jack Vandervelde, Ezry Vandervelde, and Logan Mlynarchek. He was preceded in death by his brother, Bernard Nelson.
A Memorial Service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, August 10, 2013, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Eldon Eldred officiating. Military rites will be provided under the auspices of the Charles A. Conklin American Legion Post #28. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service, beginning at 2:00 p.m., and following the service. Memorial contributions to the American Diabetes Association are appreciated.
