Elaine Hylland's Obituary
Elaine Hylland, age 96, passed away early Wednesday morning, February 8, 2012. She was born August 23, 1915 to Bendik and Olga (Thompson) Hylland in Stanley, Wisconsin, and lived most of her life in the Muskegon area. Elaine graduated from Muskegon High School in 1933, and received her Registered Nurse degree from Hackley School of Nursing in 1937. A 1st Lt. in the Army she served from 1941 – 1944 as an Army Nurse. She also served at the 121st Evacuation Hospital Europe (Rhineland – Central Europe with the 3rd Army during WWII, the Shepard Field Regional Army Hospital – Witchita Falls, TX, and at Percy Jones General in Battle Creek, MI. She completed her military career as a Captain in the Army Reserves from 1944-1948. After the Army, she was self-employed as a Private Duty nurse, specializing in care for paraplegics. Elaine is survived by her nieces and nephews, Pamela (VanDam) and Dale Vanderstelt, Sandra (VanDam) and Tim Purcell, Thomas and Janice Hylland, Robert and Jane Hylland, Chris (Hylland) and Peter Harmer. She was preceded in death by her mother and father; one brother, Donn Hylland; one sister, Dorothy Maginity. A celebration of Elaine’s life will begin at 2:00 PM Saturday in the Sytsema Funeral Home’s Lee Chapel Family Center.
