Elizabeth "Betty" Meier's Obituary
Elizabeth “Betty” Meier, age 88, of Grand Haven passed away Saturday, September 1, 2007, at the Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence in Muskegon. She was born July 4, 1919, in Grand Haven to Dr. Clarence and Barbara (Baker) Vyn. She was the first baby born at Elizabeth Hatton Hospital, currently North Ottawa Community Hospital, in Grand Haven.
Betty was raised in Detroit and graduated from Redford High School. She graduated from Michigan State University and was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority. Betty served as an American Red Cross Nurse’s Aide during World War II. She moved to Grand Haven in 1946 following the conclusion of the war and was employed as a Physical Therapist at North Ottawa Community Hospital for 23 years. She served as a First Aid instructor in Ottawa County for 15 years and was active with various organizations in the community, including Cub Scouts, Love INC, the Loutit District Library, and the Tri-Cities Historical Society. She enjoyed sports, knitting, needlepoint, and reading.
Survivors include two sons, William “Vyn” (Salli) Meier of Carlsbad, CA, and Mark “Nick” (Julia) Meier of Plainwell, MI; four grandchildren: John (Heidi) Meier of Simi Valley, CA, Katrina (Richard) Gerace of San Diego, CA, and Betsy Meier and Kathleen Meier, both of Plainwell; three great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Norma Vyn of Spring Lake; and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William Vyn.
A memorial service for Betty will be held at St. John’s Lutheran Church at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 22, 2007, with Rev. Dieter Haupt officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Red Cross or to the Leila & Cyrus Poppen Hospice Residence of Harbor Hospice.
