Elizabeth Hannah Grable's Obituary
Elizabeth Hannah Grable, age 89, of Spring Lake passed away Monday, January 5, 2009, at a local care facility. She was born September 7, 1919, in Bessemer, MI, to William II and Elsie (Worden) Baird, and she married R. Harold Grable on August 17, 1946, in Washington D.C. He preceded her in death on March 7, 2003.
Mrs. Grable moved to the Tri-Cities area from Oshkosh, WI, in 1961. She was an active member of the First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in Muskegon, attaining the position of Elder Emeritus. She was also an accomplished singer, pianist, and choir member.
High school salutatorian, she earned her AA degree in Michigan, then received her BA degree in American Studies from George Washington University while working for the Federal Government. She was also employed by the Red Cross in Washington, D.C. and Atlanta, GA. A member of the American Association of University Women, Mrs. Grable was a published writer, holding officer positions in Muskegon Writers and the Michigan Poetry Society. She was also active in a local learning disabilities association, as well as many other organizations.
Survivors include two daughters, Celia Grable of Grand Haven and Nancy (Morton) Abish of Grand Rapids; a son, Daniel Grable of Spring Lake; two grandchildren, Mathew MacDonald and Jason Abish; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, Rachel Gebhardt, and a brother, William Baird III.
The service for Elizabeth will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 9, 2009, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven with Rev. Diane Stark and Rev. Drew Sweetman officiating. Friends may meet the family 6-8 p.m. Thursday, January 8, and one hour prior to the service on Friday at the funeral home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Spring Lake Cemetery.
