Elsie M. Smith's Obituary
Mrs. Elsie Marie Smith, age 84, of Spring Lake passed away Saturday, November 17, 2007, at North Ottawa Community Hospital. Born May 9, 1923, to the late Cornelius and Hattie (DeJonge) DeMeester in Grand Rapids, she married George Smith on March 8, 1946, in Coopersville.
Moving from Coopersville to Spring Lake in 1948, Elsie was employed as a beautician until the birth of her children. As a member of Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church she had been active in the Mary Martha Circle and as a Calvinette leader. Elsie enjoyed sewing her children's clothes and knitting, having done over 500 hats for newborn babies in our local hospital.
Elsie is survived by George, her loving husband of 61 years; son Stanley (Carol) Smith of West Olive; daughter-in-law Patricia Smith of Tennesee; 3 grandchildren: Courtney Lampen, Evan Smith, and Erin Purvis; 3 great-grandchildren; a sister Genevieve Saliers of Coopersville; brother Marvin (Carol) DeMeester of Florida; and several nieces and nephews. Elsie was preceded in death by her son, Richard, two years ago and brothers Raymond and John DeMeester.
The funeral service celebrating Elsie's life will be held Wednesday, November 21, at 11:00 a.m. at Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Drew Sweetman and Rev. James VanderMeiden officiating. Friends may meet Elsie's family 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, November 20, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Spring Lake. Interment will be in Coopersville Cemetery. Memorials to Love INC or Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church are appreciated.
