Mr. Elwood E. "Woody" Tyler's Obituary
Mr. Elwood E. “Woody” Tyler, age 90, passed away Monday morning, May 26, 2014. He was born June 27, 1923 in Muskegon to Earl and Rachel (Stitt) Tyler. Mr. Tyler was a U.S. Army Veteran of WWII, where he served under General George Patton in the 3rd Armored Division and 90th Infantry Division. He worked as a machinist for Sealed Power (SPX) for 35 years before retiring in 1988. He had also worked 15 years for Tyler Home Bakery, a family owned business. Mr. Tyler was a mentor for early elementary school children for Orchard View Schools for 15 years. He had also been the Assistant Manager for the Quarter Oak Little League team. He enjoyed building crafts and was a model railroad enthusiast. On February 13, 1943 he married the former Joyce L. Spratling in Muskegon and she survives him along with three children, Jane R. Simonson, Richard L. (Marva) Tyler, Bruce A. (Judy) Tyler all of Muskegon; 5 grandchildren, Sean Simonson, Noelle Williams, Annette (Mike) Conn, Molly (Jason) Sweeney, Greg (Mindy) Tyler; 8 great-grandchildren, Isabelle, Willow, and Mikelle Conn, Kendall and Cole Sweeney, Madelyn Tyler, and Treyton and Taylan Williams; 2 brothers, Edmond (Phyllis) Tyler of Baltimore, MD, and Jerry (Margaret) Tyler of Muskegon; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Lee Tyler; and sisters-in-law, Elaine Tyler and Eleanor Tyler. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, May 31, 2014 at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., (231) 798-1100, with Pastor Kyle DeYoung officiating. VISITATION with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will take place in Restlawn Cemetery. MEMORIALS to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital will be appreciated.
