Mr. Ernest "Ernie" Hackney, Jr.'s Obituary
Mr. Ernest “Ernie” Hackney, Jr., age 84, passed away Thursday evening, March 21, 2013 in Muskegon. He was born September 12, 1928 to Ernest and Hattie (Grissom) Hackney, Sr. in Edwardsville, IL, and came to the Muskegon area in 1938. Ernie enjoyed bowling, but most of all electronics and radio. In 1965 he began working at Bursma Electronic Distributors, Inc., and spent most of his career there. He also served as the custodian at Western Michigan Christian High School for several years. He was a WWII U.S. Army Air Corp. veteran, and a member of First Christian Reformed Church, where he served as an elder and deacon, and also belonged to the Men’s Society of the church. On June 23, 1950 he married Johanna T. Bosch, and she preceded him in death on January 27, 2005. SURVIVORS include three daughters, Norma (Steve) Ring of Montague, Barb (Don ) Hackenberg of Ravenna, Karen (Steve) Emelander of Hudsonville; son-in-law, Jim (Sandy) Ring of Muskegon; 9 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 1 brother, Charles (Patricia) Hackney of Fruitport; 2 sisters, Sylvia (Norman) Barnhard, Dorothy J. (Eric) Wiggen, both of Muskegon; special friend, Virginia Gonzales. Ernie was also preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Cheryl Ring; and 1 granddaughter, Jamie. THE FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at 11:00 AM Monday at First Christian Reformed Church, 1450 Catherine Ave., Muskegon, with Pastor Chip Hackney officiating. Burial will take place at Sunrise Memorial Gardens. VISITATION at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc., 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444, (231) 798-1100, will be from 2-5 PM Sunday, and 1 hour prior to the service at church.
