So very sad to read this news Monday night. Gene got me my first job at the Tribune and we were always friends. I'm sure he was in heaven a half-hour 'for the devil knew he was was dead! (Irish blessing). Prayers for you all.

I'm sorry I didn't hear Gene died. Those who would have told me are no longer at First Baptist or in FL. I remember Gene from times "Uncle" Jerry was at church and the two were together when I was growing up (mind you I'm a half a century now). He and Jerry both lived lives pleasing to their Lord and were always extremely mission minded. They were always people to look up to as strong Christians men. In that era there were many wonderful Christian women who have gone "home" as well now but I praise God for knowing "Uncle" Jerry and his brother Gene.

Mr. Darling was my coop teacher, I also attended Robinson Baptist with him. He was a very kind man. Susan Harrison

My favorite memories of Uncle Gene are the yummie breakfast at the "Oval"/Grand Haven Beach or North Shore Beach! He would organize and plan it a few times each summer. Grandma Darling was always there, along with Uncle Gerald and he would include the missionary families that might be home on furlough. Gene would get the fire going while the cousins would play ball or jump off the swings. Oh the smell of bacon and eggs filled the air, and my Mom and Dad always brought the sweet rolls from Braaks' Bakery. The 'best' ingredient was a little sand and grit!! Uncle Gene always saw the FUN side of life.
Condolence to the family-Ruth you have been a faithful and loving wife and comfort for 27 years –your faith and loyalty has never waned-Draw strength in knowing your family and those who love you are holding you up in prayer at this difficult time.
