Eugene Louis Van Dyke's Obituary
Eugene “Gene” Van Dyke, age 89, of Spring Lake, went to be with his Lord and Savior on Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at Railside Assisted Living Center in Byron Center. He was born August 8, 1924, in Grand Haven to Louis and Sena (Balgooyen) Van Dyke.
Gene graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School. He then proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy aboard a ship that saw action in five major invasions in the South Pacific during WWII. He then graduated from Muskegon Business College with a degree in Business Administration, with a major in accounting. Gene was employed at Grand Haven Stamped Products for forty years as Purchasing and Accounting Manager. He was a member of Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church, serving in various capacities, including Deacon and Chairman of the Building Committee during construction of the new church. He was a member of the Purchasing Managers Society and had served as President of the Supervisors Society. He enjoyed traveling, wood carving, gardening, golfing, hunting, and fishing.
On April 23, 1948, he married the love of his life, Lucille “Peg” Plutschouw in Grand Haven and they enjoyed 65 years of marriage. He is lovingly remembered by his wife, Lucille “Peg” Van Dyke; daughter, Carolyn (Mike) Windemuller of Dorr; son, Roger (Carole) Van Dyke of Chapel Hill, NC; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Gertrude (Robert) Long of Shipshewana, Indiana.
The funeral service for Gene will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, February 8, 2014, at Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Drew Sweetman officiating. Friends may meet the family one hour prior to the service. Military rites will be provided under the auspices of the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post #28 Honor Guard.
