Eugene "Gene" Wierenga's Obituary
Mr. Eugene “Gene” Wierenga, age 91, of Spring Lake passed away Friday, April 19, 2019. He was born January 28, 1928 in Nunica to William, Sr. and Anna (Olthof) Wierenga. On February 25, 1954 he married Donna Katt.
Gene was a member of Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church, where he was a Sunday School Teacher, Cadet leader, Deacon and Elder. Gene was very dedicated to the church he loved. He served in the US Army during the Korean War. Gene was a volunteer fire fighter for 20 years for Spring Lake Township and retired in 1993 from the township after running the cemetery for 25 years. In his free time, he enjoyed cutting and splitting wood and working on small engines.
He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Donna; three children: Ted (Tosha) Wierenga of Nunica, Lori (Andy) Heemskerk of Smithville, Ontario, and Patti (Mark) Weesies of Montague; daughter-in-law, Char Ksycki; eight grandchildren: RJ (Lauren) Wierenga, Kevin Wierenga, Kimberly (Spencer) Lang, Nathan (Cheryl) Heemskerk, Michelle (Jake) Huisman, Ashley (Matthew) Lomasney, Melanie, and Anna Weesies; ten great-grandchildren. He is also survived by eight siblings: George (Ruth) Wierenga, Etta Peterson, Bill (Arlene) Wierenga, Ken Wierenga, Jon Wierenga, Alice (Jim) Whitwam, David Wierenga and Roy (Sue) Wierenga; brother-in-law, Roger (Sandy) Katt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, James in 2004; siblings: Harold, Jeanette, Willene, and JoAnn.
Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Tuesday, April 23, 2019 at Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Michael Westerveld officiating. Visitation will be 4-7 PM Monday, April 22, 2019 at The VanZantwick Chapel (620 Washington Ave, Grand Haven) Interment will take place in Spring Lake Township Cemetery.
