Florence “Flo” M. Schmerler, age 82, of Grand Haven passed away Thursday, May 15, 2008. She was born April 1, 1926, in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Joseph and Florence (McGill) Markey, and she married John Albert Schmerler on Decemb Read Obituary
Susan, my sympathy to you and your family. I have had the privilege to have known your mother. She was truly a gifted master in her field of education and many, many students have been helped by her program.
Above all else Susan, your mother was a very caring person and your boys have been blessed to have had such a wonderful Grandmother.

I remember Flo with great fondness. She was a mentor before they had them!
When I was hired as a teacher at ValleyView Jr. High School in Edina, Mn., fall of 1964, my position was 4 7th grade math classes and l 9th grade American Government.
I was out of my element in the Government class. Without the help of Flo and Roxie Smith, I would not have survived the year.
Beyond that help, Flo was a wonderful example of how to serve fellow teachers. I worked with her in the old Faculty Club, learned much from her re Teacher Negotiation matters, and just generally enjoyed her sparkling wit and enthusiasm for life and working with kids.
We were all blessed to know and work with Flo Schmerler.

Flo may have been small in stature, but she was such a vibrant and strong character. She was one smart lady! Just think of all the lives she has touched! I witnessed her genuine capacity for giving, especially when the boys were young and John was so sick.She was a tower of strength! Flo cared for and loved all of you so much!

I am sorry for you loss, Susan. Your mom always went the extra mile to help children in the GHAPS school system. She even evaluated my son who was struggling with early reading skills. I was so sorry to hear about the passing of Flo. I didn't have the privilege of working directly with Flo, but remember seeing her around school. I have heard some wonderful stories about what a "firecracker" she was. I am sure she has touched many lives, and will be remembered for many years to come.
Susan, I know you were extrememly close with your mom, and I hope you are finding comfort in the fact that she is now at peace. I have enjoyed getting to know you better the past couple of years, and consider you as a close friend. You and your family will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Klooster, Arend, Kyle and Matt I remember like it was yesterday learning the A, E, I, O, U (and sometimes W and Y) rules and diagrams. My foundation for reading came from time spent with Grandy. Not only will I remember her for the education she gave me, but also the great times spent at her house on Indian Trails. Jumping on the trampoline and swimming in the pool.
