Floyd A. Zahrt's Obituary
Mr. Floyd Andrew Zahrt, age 53, passed away unexpectedly December 6, 2009 at his home. Floyd was born August 8, 1956 in Muskegon to Norman and Marvel Zahrt. After graduating from Muskegon High School in 1975, Floyd worked as a bartender in numerous bars and clubs in Muskegon. Floyd met Chris McCarthy in the summer of 1981; marrying on August 10, 1984. In 1989, after a very serious and acute illness, Floyd began college courses, earning an Associates degree and a Bachelors degree in Business. Floyd then went on to graduate with honors, earning a Master of Business Administration degree from Baker College in 2005. Floyd was a 25+ year member of the Lakeside Vets Club, Muskegon Eagles #668 and Tatra Hall. He had been employed at a number of local companies including The Comfort Inn, Ozzie’s Party Store and Baker College. Floyd was particularly known for his sense of humor. He had a wicked, quick wit and was a master of the “one-liner”. He knew just about every joke that had ever been told and he enjoyed jokes even when he was the subject. Floyd was also known for his willingness to help others. He volunteered for many organizations including Michigan Irish Music Festival, Arc Muskegon, Muskegon High School Band Parents, Muskegon Air Fair, Muskegon Summer Celebration, and countless other organizations and events. Floyd was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed attending local hockey games at the LC Walker Arena with Bob & Lyn. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Chris McCarthy Zahrt; his son, Andrew John Zahrt; siblings, Sue (Jim) Launstein, Norman (Tracy) Zahrt, Sandy (Skip) Becker, all of Muskegon, sisters-in-law, Theresa Zahrt, Toni (Del) Baars, Michelle (Tony) Wroblewski, of Muskegon, Sylvia (Glenn) Baird of Grand Rapids, Marianne (Bill) Mikkelsen of Novi; many nieces, nephews and friends including very special best friends, Bob Holstrom & Lyn Luhman. Floyd was preceded in death by his parents, Marvel & Norman Zahrt; brothers, Stanley and Paul and father & mother-in-law, Sylvan (Slats) & Joan McCarthy. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, December 12, 2009 at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey Street 231 726-5210 with Rev. Fr. Andrew Thompson officiating. VISITATION with the family will be 5-8 PM Friday. Memorial contributions in Floyd’s name may be made to Arc Muskegon.
