Frank Such's Obituary
Mr. Frank Such, age 90, of Grand Haven passed away on Thursday, February 19, 2015 at Sanctuary at the Shore. He was born March 29, 1924, in Richmond, Indiana to George and Julia (Podojak) Such.
Frank was a pillar of the Grand Haven community having retired from the public school system in 1986 after serving as a teacher and principal at several of the elementary schools for 33 years. He served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 upon which he developed a love for fishing – something he retained for the remainder of his life. He was an active member of St. Patrick’s Catholic Church and enjoyed engaging in various types of service throughout the community, including with Meals On Wheels and Love INC.
He recently celebrated 67 years of marriage to his beloved wife, Virginia Drew, whom he wed on January 17, 1948 in Saginaw. She survives him along with five of their children: three sons: Craig (Bev) Such of Fruitport, Tad Such of Grand Rapids, and Ross (Leslie) Such of Saugatuck; and two daughters, Deborah (Bob) Ver Berkmoes of Cheboygan, and Jill (Charles) Van Werden of Petoskey. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Julia; siblings George Such, Julia Easlick, Margaret Kazmar, Helen Kovacs, and Steve Such; and a son, Brad.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, February 23, 2015, at St. Patrick – St. Anthony Catholic Church in Grand Haven with Rev. Fr. Philip Shangraw as celebrant. Military honors will be provided by the American Legion Charles A. Conklin Post # 28 Honor Guard. Friends may meet the family from 12-4 p.m. on Sunday, February 22, 2015, at VanZantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home in Grand Haven. Interment will be in Lakeshore Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in memory of Frank can be made to Grand Haven Area Community Foundation to start a scholarship fund for Grand Haven High School students.
