Frank "Ed" Wikander's Obituary
Frank Edwin Wikander, age 95, passed away Tuesday morning, December 14, 2010, at his home, the Sanctuary at the Oaks. He was born in Detroit, MI on September 16, 1915 to Frank and Mona (Brown) Wikander. Ed came to Muskegon as a young man and graduated from Muskegon H.S. in 1934. Following graduation, he enlisted into the Navy and was a veteran of both WWII and the Korean wars. Ed served his country in the Navy for more than 13 years and was a life member of VFW Post 3195. Following his discharge from the service in 1945, Ed returned to Muskegon and was employed by Shaw Box Crane, retiring from Dresser Crane and Hoist in 1978. He married the former Vera Charon on October 26, 1946 and she preceded him in death on November 21, 2006. Ed was an accomplished woodworker. He assisted in the woodworking department at Mona Shores High School and throughout the years, helped preserve the memory of many of our local veterans with his handcrafted flag cases. Mr. Wikander is survived by: one son, Craig (Barbara) Wikander of N. Muskegon; one daughter, Laurie (Frank) Kern of Twin Lake; five grandchildren, Matthew (Erica) Wikander, Justin Wikander, Katherine Wikander, Stephen Kern and Michelle Kern and one great-granddaughter, Eleanor Wikander. He also was preceded in death by a brother, Roy and sister, Blanche Veltman. A memorial service will be held, 11:00 A.M., Thursday, December 23, 2010 at: The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100. Rev. Paul Burmeister, Capt. USN officiating. Military Rites will be performed under the auspices of the VFW Post 3195 Honor Guard. He will be laid to rest in Sunrise Memorial Gardens Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please contribute to: the Muskegon Community Foundation, Veterans Park Improvement Fund or Mercy VNS Hospice. Ed’s family would like to thank the caring staff of the Sanctuary at the Oaks for the loving care given their father.
