Frederick "Fred" Peterson's Obituary
Mr. Frederick “Fred” Peterson, age 87, of Spring Lake passed away Sunday, April 24, 2016 at Heartwood Lodge. He was born October 8, 1928 in Spring Lake to Andrew and Helen (VanderZwaag) Peterson. On September 14, 1955 he married Muriel Hastings in Grand Haven.
Fred was a member of Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church and a past member of the American Rose Society. He served his country in the US Army in Korean War. Fred was a former member and president of the Spring Lake Village Council and served on the Spring Lake Township board, where he also served many years on the recreation and zoning boards. Fred retired from Dykstra Food as Vice President in 1986. He enjoyed growing roses, building houses and furniture and collecting antiques. He also had a large collection of bud vases and sheet music. Family was always important to Fred and he loved being with them.
He is survived by his wife, Muriel; four children: Cindy (Mark) Bennington of Chesterfield, MO, Suzanne Peterson of Nunica, Steve (Gail) Peterson of Grand Rapids, Lisa (Mike) Kendra of Spring Lake; eight grandchildren: Ashley Bennington, Christian Bennington, Noelle Peterson-Gray, Jenna Peterson, Alexa Peterson, Eryn Kendra, Nick (Holly) Kendra, Zack (Danielle) Kendra; one great-grandson, Sebastian Kendra. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Irene Peterson; brother-in-law, Wesley (Agnes) DeWitt; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Owen and John Peterson; a sister, Helen A. DeWitt; and a sister-in-law, Mary Peterson-Veurink.
A memorial service will be held 11:00 AM Saturday, April 30, 2016 at Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Drew Sweetman officiating. Visitation will be 5-8 PM Friday, April 29, 2016 at church. Interment will take place in Spring Lake Township Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions in memory of Fred may be given to Spring Lake Christian Reformed Church, Hospice of North Ottawa Community or Tri-Cities Historical Museum.
