Frederick J. Nielson's Obituary
Mr. Frederick J. Nielsen, age 85, passed away Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the Poppen Residence. He was born on July 10, 1925 in Muskegon to Hans and Mildred (Sweet) Nielsen and was a life long resident. He served his country in the US Army during WW II, where he received the Bronze Star. Fred also served the City of Muskegon both as Mayor and City Commissioner for 8 years. He is a lifetime Vice-President of the LST. Fred was a member of Bethany Christian Reformed Church, where he served as deacon, Sunday school teacher, and cadet counselor. He married the former Flo Goodyke Vanderlaan on March 29, 1976 and she survives him along with 2 sons, John (Pat) Nielsen and Ted Nielsen; step children, Debra (Dennis) Kruttlin, Jodi VanderMeulen, Rick (Robin) Vanderlaan, and Brian (Debora) Vanderlaan; 9 grandchildren; and 13 great grandchildren. Fred was preceded in death by his first wife, Irma Warber in 1974; and 5 sisters. The FUNERAL SERVICE will be 2PM Sunday at Bethany Christian Reformed Church (1105 Terrace St.) with Rev. David Sieplinga officiating. VISITATION with the family will be 6-8PM Saturday at The Lee Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100. Burial will take place in Oakwood Cemetery. Memorial Contributions to the LST, or Western Michigan Christian High School will be appreciated.
