George W. Bailey's Obituary
George W. Bailey, age 75, passed away Wednesday evening, October 22, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on September 5, 1950, to George and Betty (Garrison) Bailey in Sherman, TX. George spent his early years in Durant, OK before moving to Mentone, CA during his adolescence. He graduated from Redlands High School with the Class of 1968. Shortly after, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving four years as a Gunner’s Mate during the Vietnam War. On April 5, 1974, George married the love of his life, Charlyn Elya, in Michigan. It was truly love at first sight, within two weeks of meeting, George knew she was the one. Together they shared 51 wonderful years filled with love, laughter, and countless adventures. Michigan became home for George, where he was blessed with a beautiful family and lifelong friendships. He also served in the Michigan National Guard for several years and was a proud member of the American Legion, Sherman Moore Post #297. George took great pride in honoring his fellow veterans, often participating in honor guard funerals. He worked as a machine repairman at General Motors for 17 years before retiring in 1995. A faithful servant of the Lord, George attended Harvest Bible Chapel in Spring Lake, where he deeply valued the fellowship of his small group. In his younger years, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping with friends and family. He also had a passion for traveling, especially trips with his family visiting dear friends in the Czech Republic, enjoying lake life, and cherishing every moment spent with his beloved wife, Charlyn. Above all, George was a devoted family man. He never missed an opportunity to show up, supporting his loved ones at every event he could. He loved his family unconditionally and will forever be remembered as a devoted husband, wonderful father, proud grandpa and great-grandpa, caring brother, and loyal friend to many. George will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. He is survived by his loving wife, Charlyn Bailey; five children, Glenn (Jennifer) Bailey, Estella (Donald) Rohm, Kristin Bailey, Jana (Mirek) Maredova and Simona Arbogast; 10 grandchildren, Layne, Adam, Haley, Jaxson, Brycen, Charlotte, Lucie, Jindra, Matyas and Nikol; six great-grandchildren, Kolt, Paisleigh, Wesson, Laney, Case and Hayden; step-father, Glenn Wilburt; brother, Jim (Sarah) Wilburt; sister, Patricia (Ed) McCormick; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his father, George W. Bailey Sr; and mother, Betty Wilburt. A Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday, October 28, 2025, at The Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St., Norton Shores, MI 49444 with visitation one-hour prior. Military Rites will be performed by the Ravenna American Legion Honor Guard. A Visitation with the family will be held from 5-8:00 PM on Monday, October 27, 2025, at The Lee Chapel. He will be laid to rest at Fort Custer National Cemetery.
