George Anton Dobry's Obituary
George Anton Dobry, age 80, passed away on November 22, 2025, at the Harbor Hospice Poppen Residence in Muskegon, Michigan. George was born on November 28, 1944, in Chickasha, Oklahoma, to Gertrude Magdalena (Reding) and Anton Cyril Dobry. George graduated from St. Joseph’s Academy in 1962 and attended the University of Oklahoma before joining the Army to serve as a Medical Technician stationed in Panama. After leaving the Army, George earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma and went on to pursue a career as a laboratory technician and manager.
George met Nancy Louise Cobb at the University of Oklahoma, and soon after their marriage, they moved from Oklahoma to Michigan. George took a job at Muskegon General Hospital as a Medical Technologist, eventually becoming the Manager of the Clinical Laboratory at General and later the first Manager of the combined Mercy and General Hospital’s Clinical Laboratory. George retired in 2016.
George was very active in scouting with his boys and received many honors and awards for his adult service to the Boy Scouts of America. George was recognized with the Vigil Honor Order of the Arrow, as well as the Silver Beaver award, to name a few.
He enjoyed hunting at a cabin near Hesperia with a group of close friends, and fishing on the lakes and rivers around West Michigan. George was an avid golfer, and in the 1970s, he and Nancy joined the Sandbagger’s couple’s league at Fruitport Golf Course, where they played weekly with lots of laughter. George was also a member at Lincoln Golf Club, where he enjoyed many rounds with his sons and friends.
In his retirement, George continued to play golf around the area with his group of senior golfers. George joined the Northside Lions Club, delivering mints and helping with pancake breakfasts. He also volunteered his time at the VFW. George was active with St. Mary’s of the Woods Catholic Church/Prince of Peace, most recently serving on the finance committee for the combined parish.
George will be missed by his son, Eric (Merica), and grandchildren, Margaret (9) and Thomas (6); his son, Neal (Angelica), and grandchildren, Lucas (20), Jackson (18), and Arabella (4); and his ex-wife and lifelong friend, Nancy Dobry. George is also survived by his sister-in-law, Pat Langley of Norman, Oklahoma, and her family, and two Michigan cousins, Sandra Dunning and Linda LeMieux, and their families. George was preceded in death by his parents and his brothers, Walter Dobry and Hubert (Julie) Dobry.
A memorial service for George will be held on Monday, December 8, 2025, at 11:00 am at the Lee Chapel of Sytsema Funeral and Cremation Services, 6291 Harvey St, Norton Shores, MI 49444. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service. Memorial contributions in George’s honor may be made to the Harbor Hospice Foundation for the Poppen Residence.
