George Leon Petrie Goudie's Obituary
Mr. George Leon Petrie Goudie, age 93, passed away peacefully Saturday, May 13, 2017 at his home, surrounded by his family, in Norton Shores. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on October 17, 1923 to John and Phyllis (Petrie) Goudie. George enlisted in the Unites States Marines 32 days after the attacks on Pearl Harbor. Soon after he was fighting in the South Pacific and on August 7, 1942, in the Battle of Guadalcanal, George was shot by a sniper. After his recovery, he completed 26 months and two campaigns in the South Pacific. George worked as an accountant for many years at EH Sheldon and Co. and later at American Seating Company prior to his retirement. He was an active member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church where he served as a lay minister until age 90. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family, and he also loved golfing, fishing, and in his earlier years, enjoyed square dancing with his wife, Carmen. On February 14, 1946, George married the former Carmen Louise Williams in Muskegon and she survives him along with three sons, George (Christine) Goudie, Jim (Sharon) Goudie and John (Lori) Goudie; twin daughters, Pat (Tom) Arnote and Pam (Larry) LeBeau; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Jack Goudie. VISITATION will be from 4-7 PM Tuesday, May 16, 2017 at The Walburn Chapel, 1547 W. Sherman Blvd., 231-759-8565. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated 11:00 AM Wednesday, May 17, 2017 at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church (2929 McCracken, Muskegon 49441) with Rev. Fr. Charles D. Hall presiding. Military Honors will be performed under the auspices of the Muskegon County Council. Interment will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery. MEMORIALS in George’s memory may be directed to St. Francis Church or to the Alzheimer’s Association.
