George Murel Brown's Obituary
Mr. George Murel Brown, age 98, passed away Thursday, December 22, 2011, at Seminole Shores Living Center. He was born in Hart, MI and moved to Muskegon in 1925. During the era of Big Bands, he was a member of Jim Kowkowski’s and Frank Lockage’s bands playing trumpet. Also, he played in the West Shore Symphony Orchestra under the direction of John Wheeler, as well as the Charlie Sutton Concert and Marching Band. Soon after becoming a Christian, he became a staff musician for Youth for Christ from 1944 to the early 50’s under the direction of Morry Carlson. After nine years working with Sealed Power in Muskegon, in 1945, Mr. Brown became co-founder and owner of Aero Manufacturing and Machine Company. After the success of this initial business, Harbor Steel & Co. was formed in 1952 followed shortly by Atlas Supply Company. He retired in 1973 allowing more time to enjoy his passion of hunting, fishing and motorcycling. He was a member of Lake Harbor Baptist Church serving on the deacon and trustee boards as well as directing the choir and orchestra. Mr. Brown was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, the former Erma Stewart, in 1991; his son, Dennis Brown in 2005; and his daughter, Sharon Wickland in 2008. SURVIVORS include 2 daughters, Jackie (Doug) Bowen of Midland, MI; Jill (Ned) Jandron of Muskegon, MI; 5 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren. A MEMORIAL SERVICE will be held 11:00 AM Thursday, December 29, 2011 at Calvary Church (5873 Kendra Road, Fruitport) with Pastor Terry Fulk officiating. VISITATION will be one hour prior to the service, 10-11 AM Thursday at the church. INTERMENT will take place at Lakeside Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the charity of choice.
