Mr. Gerald "Jerry" Bruining's Obituary
Mr. Gerald Carl “Jerry” Bruining, age 90, passed away Friday evening, June 29, 2018. Gerald was born August 28, 1927 in Muskegon to Clarence and Irene (Young) Bruining. He was an Eagle Scout and later proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. Jerry earned degrees from Western Michigan University, University of Michigan, and Colorado College. On May 28, 1949, he married the former Shirley Ann Ferm in Muskegon and she preceded him in death on March 20, 2010. Gerald taught at Muskegon Community College for 37 years, retiring in 1988. Earlier on in his career, he had taught at Maple Grove Elementary School and Muskegon High School. He was a longtime member of Central United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir and served on several committees throughout the years. He was also very active in the Civic Theatre and the Mona Shores Choir Association. He was an avid U of M Football Fan. Jerry enjoyed gardening, and also playing pool and golf with his friends on Tuesdays. Most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family, including his dog, Ginger. He is survived by his children, Stephen (Karen) Bruining of Ferrysburg, Daniel (Kersti) Bruining of Suttons Bay, and Ann (Ray) Martinez of Fruitport; 10 grandchildren, Nicole, Ron, Bobby, Stephanie, Patrick, Rein, Ella, Ray J., Tommy and Crystal; 2 great-grandchildren, Gabriella and Noel; a brother, Dwight (Carol) Bruining of Orlando, FL.; a sister, Patricia (Gerrit) VanDonkelaar of Muskegon; and many nieces and nephews. Gerald was also preceded in death by his son, Thomas; his parents; and a sister, Nancy DeYoung. A Funeral Service will be held 11 AM Friday, July 6, 2018 at Central United Methodist Church, 1011 Second St., with Rev. Jeff Bowman officiating. VISITATION will be from 5-8 PM Thursday, July 5th at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100. Memorial Contributions may be made to Central United Methodist Church.
