Gladys Mae Legard's Obituary
Mrs. Gladys Mae Legard, age 101, passed away Tuesday October 4, 2016. Gladys was born on April 6, 1915 to Jacob R. and Wilhelmina (DeLong) Workman in Muskegon. On October 13, 1933 she married Morgan B. Legard, after 65 years of marriage, he preceded her death on February 27, 1998. Gladys was a devoted and faithful Christian wife and mother who ensured her children attend Sunday school. She was a long time member of Laketon Bethel Reformed Church where Gladys served in the Ladies Circle and attended Bible Study. Gladys was warm, friendly and welcoming, with continuing smiles. Many fond memories were shared around the kitchen table while playing cards, having great food, and conversation over the years with friends and family. Gladys worked for 10 years at JC Penney Department Store in the “old” downtown Muskegon. Her retirement years were spent in Grand Maris, Michigan collecting agates on the shore of Lake Superior, picking blueberries in the wilds of the Upper Peninsula, and cooking fish caught by her husband. They also spent time in Antrim County where Gladys loved collecting Petoskey Stones on the shores of Grand Traverse Bay. Gladys loved baking, canning, and cooking for her family and was an excellent seamstress. Her SURVIVORS include her children Bob (Sally) Legard of N. Muskegon, Janet (Ron) Ortquist of Ludington, Sharon (Arthur) Jacobs of N. Muskegon, Carol Legard of Hudsonville, and David (Paula) Legard of N. Muskegon; 17 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 4 great-great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews. Gladys was preceded in death by her infant son, James Douglas; grandson, Ted Cooper; brothers Ed, Bud, Ralph and Jack; and sisters, Thelma Workman, Ruth Perkins and Theressa Cooper. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday October 8th at Laketon Bethel Reformed Church (1568 W. Giles Rd.) with Rev. Dr. Sherwin Brantsen officiating. Visitation with the family will be one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in the Laketon Township Cemetery following the ceremony. Memorial contributions may be made to Laketon Bethel Senior Ministries.
