Grace Cecelia Shafer's Obituary
Mrs. Grace C. Shafer, age 90, passed away early Thursday morning, August 29, in Muskegon. She was born April 2, 1923 to Eugene and Myrtle (Maue) McCarthy in Onekama, and moved to Muskegon in 1947. Grace was a Registered Nurse for over fifty years and worked at Mercy Hospital, Sherman Oaks Nursing Home, and as a home-care professional. She was a member of St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church. Above all, Grace loved her children, religion, and profession and passed values of hard work and Irish pride to her children and all who were fortunate enough to know her. In death, as in life, she was courageous and loving. SURVIVORS include 5 children, Mary “Cathy” (Gerald) Wahr of Norton Shores, Cynthia McCarthy (John Sinclair) of Santa Rosa, CA, Janet (David) Boone of Windham, Maine and Norton Shores, Gregory (Bernadette Gongora) Shafer of Grand Blanc, Jacqueline Leppert of Indianapolis, IN; grandchildren, Michelle (Michael) Engels, Heather Boone, Christopher Boone, Ryan Boone, Aislinn McCarthy-Sinclair, Brendan McCarthy-Sinclair, Matthew Leppert, Patrick Leppert; great-grandchildren, Dylan Engels and Braxton Boone; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Eugene and Myrtle; brothers, Lester (Audrey), John (Carol), and Ward (Marva); sisters, Fay (Ed) McDermott and Fern (Ted) Widgren; and a nephew, Tom McCarthy. THE MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated at 11:00 AM Saturday at St. Francis de Sales Catholic Church, Marian Chapel, with the Rev. Fr. Philip P. Salmonowicz presiding.
