Grace Elizabeth "Aunt Grace" DeVries' Obituary
Ms. Grace “Aunt Grace” Elizabeth , age 92 , went to be with her Lord and Savior, Friday, October 22, 2010. Grace was born December 8, 1917 in Muskegon to Eno and Elizabeth (Kieft) DeVries. She had worked at Westran Corporation as a bookkeeper for nearly 49 years prior to her retirement in 1984. Grace was a lifetime member of Bethany Christian Reformed Church where she taught Sunday school for 50 years, sang in the choir for 60 years, and was a part of Women’s Fellowship for many years. Grace volunteered for Telecare through Bethany, checking daily by phone on area shut-ins. She had also volunteered at DeBoer Nursing Home since 1965, singing and playing piano for services held there. She volunteered her time at Hackley Hospital in past years. Grace also played and sang for many funeral and weddings throughout the years. She enjoyed traveling, trips to Florida, The National Bowling Tournaments, crossword puzzles, and reading. Grace is SURVIVED by many nieces, nephews and their families, and many dear friends. She was like a second mother to her nieces, Sherry DeBoer and Sandra Pickett, and nephew Larry Westerlind, as they shared a home during their early years. Grace is also remembered and loved by many of the students involved in Campus Ministry at Muskegon Community College and Grand Valley State University as she participated in activities with them. She was preceded in death by her parents; 4 brothers, Robert, Howard, Fred, and John; 2 sisters, Catherine Berkel and Edith Westerlind. A FUNERAL SERVICE will be held 11AM Tuesday, October 26, 2010 at Bethany Christian Reformed Church (1105 Terrace St.) with her pastor, Rev. David Sieplinga and her niece Sherry’s husband, Rev. John DeBoer co-officiating. VISITATION will be one hour prior to the service (10-11AM) at the church. MEMORIAL CONTRIBUTIONS may be made to Bethany Church or the Muskegon Rescue Mission.
