Hallie Broaddus Markel's Obituary
Hallie Broaddus Markel lived her life of 94 years until August 11, when she passed away in Whitehall, MI. Hallie was born on November 9, 1920 to Ethel and Luther Broaddus in Hazen, Arkansas. She married Kenneth E Markel Sr. on December 5, 1943, in St. Louis, MO and the two raised 3 children, Kenneth Jr (Mark), Steve and Christine. Hallie relished her children, grandchildren, extended Broaddus family and elementary children as a teacher, mother, grandmother, aunt and all-around matriarch. She is best remembered by her unique and spontaneous poetry, math skills and over the years her constant attention to continuous contact with the 70+ Broaddus family members, of which she was one of 6 siblings, with 2 older brothers, Luther and Foley, and 3 sisters, Margaret, Gervaise and Ethel. She is survived by her 3 children, Kenneth (his wife, Val), Steve (his wife Deb) and Christine Kreps (her husband Bruce), 7 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Hallie finished her BS at Western Michigan University in 1964 with a degree in elementary education, and spent 17 years teaching in Michigan and Indiana schools. She and Kenneth lived in St. Louis, Chicago, San Angelo & McAllen TX, Kalamazoo MI, Lafayette IN and finally settled in Coloma MI in 1969 where Kenneth was very happy to have Lake Michigan for a front yard. Hallie was always "ashin' questions".
A memorial service will be held on September 5, 11am at Ferry Memorial Church in Montague, MI - 4687 Church St., Montague MI 49437. In lieu of flowers please offer a donation to Ferry Memorial Church with a notation of "Hallie Markel Fund".
