Harold L. Shafer's Obituary
Mr. Harold L. Shafer, age 96, passed away Saturday, March 28, 2020 at American House. He was born on June 1, 1923 in Coopersville, MI to William and Alta (Eely) Shafer and resided in the area since 1941. Harold was a Veteran of the U.S. Army, and served his county in WW II. He worked for Teledyne Motors for 35 years prior to retiring in 1986. Harold was involved in Churchill Athletics Association for 14 years, and trained horses for harness racing for 18 years. His other hobbies included ice fishing, open water fishing, watching car racing on TV, but the most important thing was always his family. On January 30, 1943 he married the former Theresa Kokx, and after 75 years of marriage, she preceded him in death on August 28, 2018. SURVIVORS include his children, David R. (Shirley) Shafer of Whitehall, Gary L. (Cindy) Shafer of Mattawan, MI, Dan H. (Donna) Shafer of Ariznoa, Raymond L. (Jeannine) Shafer of Lawton, MI and Michael T. (Judy) Shafer of Muskegon; 20 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren; and brother-in-law, Harry Kokx. Harold was also preceded in death by daughter and son-in-law, Sharon (Dick) Fricke; three brothers; four sisters; and grandson, Adam Joseph Shafer. A Memorial Service will be held 11 AM, Friday, July 17, 2020 at The Lee Chapel South Portico of Sytsema Funeral & Cremation Services, 6291 S. Harvey St. Norton Shores 49444 (231) 798-1100.
