Harold B. Holstrom's Obituary
Mr. Harold Basil Holstrom, age 88, passed away Friday, February 19, 2010 at a local nursing home. He was born June 18, 1921 in Manistique, MI to Harry and Ellen (Chartier) Holstrom and lived in the Muskegon area most of his life. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy and had served in the Pacific Fleet Theatre during WWII. He was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained during battle. On June 21, 1946, he married the former Virginia Riegler in the original St. Joseph Catholic Church in Muskegon, and she preceded him in death on March 5, 2000 after 53 years of marriage. He worked as a time study engineer for Teledyne-Continental Motors for 38 years before retirement. He was a member of the original St. Joseph Catholic Church in Muskegon where he volunteered as an usher and lector. He currently was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Muskegon Eagles and Vikings Linne Lodge #57, and the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps). In his spare time, he enjoyed playing softball, bowling and golf. He was also a daily visitor to The Sandbar on Laketon Avenue where he established many lasting friendships through the years. SURVIVORS include 4 children, Bruce (Judy) Holstrom of King, NC, Chris (Dave) Edson of Shaumburg, IL, Therese (Chuck) Secord and Robert (Jeanie) Holstrom both of Muskegon; 5 grandchildren, 7 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-granddaughter; 1 brother, Harry Holstrom of Muskegon; 3 sisters, Eloise Heron of Memphis, TN, Clara Kartes and Marie Bourdon both of Muskegon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Peter James Holstrom; his daughter, Mary Carlson; his sister, Camille Holstrom; and brother, Gus Holstrom. MASS OF CHRISTIAN BURIAL will be celebrated 11:00 AM Thursday, February 25, 2010 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with the Rev. Fr. Aaron R. Ferris as celebrant. INTERMENT will take place at St. Mary Cemetery. The Rosary will be prayed at 4:45 PM Wednesday followed by VISITATION 5-8 PM Wednesday at The Sytsema Chapel, Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 737 Apple Avenue (231) 726-5210.
