Helen Ruth Howe's Obituary
A woman of great faith and spiritual conviction, Helen passed away peacefully at her home on June 22, 2013. She was much loved and survived by her two daughters – Cheryl (Ed) Stormzand, Cynthia (Chris) Howe-Briggs and five grandchildren – Nathan (Annie) Stormzand, Charles Stormzand, Meredith (Brodie) Gilchrist, Adam Freeney, and Jacqueline Freeney. She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Howe, and son, Richard, Jr. Helen was born a twin with her sister, Hazel (Scott) Payne. She is also survived by her twin sister, and 6 brothers and sisters – Carol (Hank) VanDop, Karl (Kathy) Buikema, David (Sally) Buikema, Douglas (Barb) Buikema, Jeanne (Tom) Thorburn, and Eunice Buikema. Helen had great love of family, and cherished time spent with them.
Helen graduated from Western Michigan Christian High School, and belonged to Fifth Reformed Church, and Laketon Bethel Reformed Church. As a young woman, Helen worked in the Sears paint department for many years, developing talents that would serve her well in her later career. She gave generously of her time and skills to many in the North Muskegon community. Known for her skills and work ethic as a painter, she was called upon often and volunteered tirelessly to assist others. She built a home construction and decorating business known for quality and value with her husband, Dick. She finished her career as Head of Maintenance with Matson Oldsmobile. In retirement she enjoyed extensive travels throughout Europe and the Middle East – visiting Turkey, Greece, Israel, the Netherlands, England, Ireland and Italy. Her keen sense of humor, tempered with a fierce resolve earned her a formidable reputation and sincere admiration. She will be deeply missed by all.
A Service of Celebration will be held Monday, June 24, 2013 at 2:00 PM at The Lee Chapel Sytsema Funeral Homes, Inc. 6291 S. Harvey St. 231-798-1100 VISITATION with the family will be 2-5PM Sunday, June 23, 2013. In lieu of flowers, please make contributions to Mercy VNS and Hospice Services or Muskegon Rescue Mission.
